When are flights cheapest?

There is no single magic day when all flights are cheap. But there are clear patterns in prices – and an easy way to hit them without checking prices every day.

The short answer

Flights are typically cheapest when you book well in advance and travel outside peak season. As a rule of thumb, European trips are often cheapest 1–3 months before departure, while long-haul flights to places like Thailand or the USA are often cheapest 2–6 months ahead. Prices usually rise sharply in the last couple of weeks before departure.

Which weekday are flights cheapest?

It is the travel day itself that matters most – not the day you buy the ticket. Departures on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are often cheaper than Friday and Sunday, when most people want to travel. If you can be flexible by just a day or two, you can often save a lot.

Which time of year is cheapest?

The cheapest periods are typically January to March and September to November – outside school holidays, summer vacation and Christmas. If you want to travel during the holidays, book extra early.

The easiest method: let a price alert do the work

Prices change all the time, and it is almost impossible to hit the cheapest moment yourself. With a price alert from Farezzo you choose your destination, dates and budget – then we watch the prices several times a day and let you know when the price hits your budget.

  • You don't have to check prices every day
  • You get notified the moment the price drops
  • It is free to create an alert
